All in the details – Mens style tips

Men often mention that they don’t feel there are as many fashion options in menswear as there are in womenswear. They don’t feel like they can express themselves fully with simply a shirt and a pair of chinos. What these men are forgetting is that accessorising isn’t just for women – it’s for everyone. A successful outfit is made with the details, and that goes for both women and men.

The perfect look needs to be complete from head to toe. This means that everything you wear – hats, scarves, watches, ties, cuff links, belts, socks, shoes and more – should work together, reflect your personality, and be appropriate for the occasion at hand. Nothing should be overlooked. When you go shopping, never buy a piece of clothing if you can’t think of three different ways to wear it (including accessories.) You may fancy a pair of chinos, but do you have shoes and socks to compliment them? How about a tie? Buying complete outfits also helps with this dilemma, as you will always have an idea of how to style your new finds for at least one occasion.

Some men don’t see details as something they need to worry about, when in all actuality, the entire outfit is made up of details. This includes prints and fabrics, buttons, fit, and colour. Choosing between a pinstripe or gingham shirt can set the tone for the entire outfit, and the accessories you use are what pull the outfit together.

Next time you open your closet, try and mix and match some items you haven’t worn together before. See which socks go with which shoes, which ties compliment different shirts, and which of your belts pull together your complete looks. Once you’ve mastered the art of detailing, you’ll leave your home every morning feeling confident, happy, and ready to take on the day.
