Spring Coats: Dressing for Your Body Type

Spring is rapidly approaching and we can’t help but get excited to start dressing our clients for the warmer weather. From our experience, finding that perfect spring jacket can be one of the biggest challenges of the season. Fear not as Style Doctors has your best interests in mind and will help you get that perfect jacket that will look fabulous – no matter your body type.

Boyish/ Athletic Body-shape

Boyish body types usually have tall, narrow frames with a smaller chest and bottom half (with defined shoulders). When trying to find a coat that will suit this body frame, a light trench or tailored coat will be the perfect fit. Finding one with a starched, oversized collar will provide a crisp look. If you want to create the illusion of having more curves, try a belt around your waist right below your ribs and just above your hip. This will show off your slim figure while also accentuating some curves. A classic leather biker in a shorter style will also help give the illusion of a waist. Have a look at our leather post here.

Curvy/ Hourglass Body-shape

Curvy body types have a fuller figure on top, as well as on the bottom half with a defined waist. If you were blessed with a great waist SHOW IT OFF! Don’t hide that great shape under a boyfriend or over-sized coat. A Mac or a tailored pea-coat will look great on you.

Petite Body-shape

Petite body types want to focus on finding the perfect length for a coat. Everyone loves rocking a big coat for their morning walks into the office, but how do we know when big is too big? Our stylists say that any coat that hits below the knee is too long and will look overwhelming. The extra fabric will add unneeded bulk to your frame. Pay attention to the length of the arms as well; making sure they fit properly will make a world of difference. Getting all of these lengths correct to fit your frame will result in an elongated appearance.

Whichever body type you have, it is important to remember to dress for your own lifestyle and personality. When shopping, it is key to remember the way you dress has a lot to do with how you see yourself as well as how others see you. Catering to your body type should be as important as doing your hair and make-up in the morning. Feel free to contact our friendly stylists if you have further questions or think that you could use a personal shopping trip with one of our expert personal shoppers.
