Summer Style – Dressing For Your Body Shape
Dressing for your body shape is the key to looking and feeling great. Over the years our personal stylists and personal shoppers have styled thousands of women of all different body shapes and when you know how to dress for your shape you’ll inevitably feel confident whatever the occasion.
With temperatures increasing and your patience for dressing rooms doing the opposite, staying stylish into the summer months may seem like an unreachable goal. Our stylists know that seeking that perfect summer ensemble may seem like a daunting task, but when you focus on what you look and feel good in, it’s simple as can be.
Apple or Inverted Triangle Body Shape
Characterized by broader shoulders, full bust, and narrow hips, an Apple/Inverted Triangle figures are the most challenging to dress, but fear not! To make the most of your figure, look for silhouettes that put the spotlight on your lean legs and elongate the body. Remember: Body skimming over body clinging.
While halter-tops and off-the-shoulder blouses broaden your already shapely shoulders, scoop neck and V-neck tops will be the most flattering, drawing the eye up and down. Choose a flow-y plunging blouse and a pair of tapered trousers of the same hue to create a long, lean figure. Show off your legs at night with a mini that hits 2-5” above the knee or a solid shift dress with funky detailing.
Pear (Triangle) Body Shape
The main goal of dressing a Pear shaped body is to create balance. If you’re curvy on the bottom and little on the top, focus on emphasizing your shoulders, bust, and small waist while avoiding too much fuss on your lower half.
To create the illusion of a fuller bust, try a ruffled off-the-shoulder top or bustier, drawing attention to your neck and shoulders. Highlight your middle with tulip wrap skirt or fit-and-flare dress. For going out, pair pointy-toed heels with dark flare jeans or fitted kick flares to highlight the slimmest part of your leg.
Boyish/Athletic Body Shape
Those with Boyish body types are generally long and lean, with a smaller chest and narrow hips (those with more Athletic shapes may have broader or more defined shoulders and arms.) When dressing a Boyish body type, you want to create the illusion of a shapelier silhouette while highlighting your lean figure.
Soften your edges and create curves with feminine ruffles or pleats on top. While strapless tops will flatten your chest, fitted crew necks and halters will accentuate your chest and shoulders. Pair with tailored trousers or pegged jeans. When going out, be daring with a side cut-out dress, creating the illusion of an hourglass figure.
Hourglass Body Shape
The simplest body shape to dress, an Hourglass woman is equally proportional on top and bottom with a whittled waist. Because your bust and hips are the same size, your goal in dressing is merely to enhance your natural curves.
While your body type allows you much sartorial versatility, garments that show off your waist will be your best choice. Opt for low necklines or off-the-shoulder tops and bodysuits in clingy fabrics that won’t add unnecessary bulk. A summery wrap dress should be your warm-weather go-to, or slip into a crop top and pencil skirt combo for a night out.
No matter your body type, your clothing choices should give you confidence above all else! Keep in mind that it’s not always about looking slimmer, but accentuating your best features and feeling your absolute best. Dressing for your body shape isn’t something that comes naturally to everyone and that’s OK!
