How To Wear Pastels This Spring
We’re taking inspiration from our New York personal stylist Sherly for our latest post who recently styled the above shoot inspired by this season’s pastel shades. Pastels are certainly not loved by all, but the new wave of pastel tones have shaken off their cutesy persona and come back with an edgy, sleek new look. We dare anyone not to like something from this pastel palette this spring.
High-end retailer Net-a-Porter recently reported that searches for “pastel” items have increased threefold since last September, proving that if you want to get ahead in the style stakes, gelato-coloured anything is the way to go.
We’ve combined this season’s pastel shades with three other key items you should have in your wardrobe this spring: chunky trainers, a trench coat, and a bum bag. No, we haven’t lost it, we’ll explain why these oh-so 90’s trends are once again wearable below.
Whether it’s lilac, powder blue, or baby pink, the pastel palette has made a big comeback this season. This palette can work just as well on a formal two piece, a silk evening dress, and a casual t-shirt. Even if girly isn’t typically your style, anyone can adopt this trend through kitschy-cool prints (like the Kenzo t-shirt below) and tonal two-pieces that feel cool, not cutesy.

Seen at Balenciaga, Vetements, Louis Vuitton and Stella McCartney (pictured above) but also at Adidas, Nike, Reebok, and now all over the high street, sleek, elegant Stan Smith types are being pushed aside for oversized trainers that look more at home on the cross trainer than on the front row. The chunky style is reminiscent of 90’s sportswear, but due to the over-sized, spongy soles, they are being likened more to something your Dad or Grandpa would have worn during the decade.
Pair with a slip dress for an elegant look and dress-down with a pair of tailored trousers. We’ve stuck to a pastel palette for our inspiration and kept to fairly neutral sneakers to keep the look more wearable.
Thanks to their unmatched versatility, the best trench coats have long been regarded as a trans-seasonal staple. In fact, they are one of the few items of clothing suitable for both smart and casual occasions. With jeans or formal trousers, ankle boots or trainers – they work with everything and can be worn by all ages, shapes and sizes.
Belt bag, bum bag. fanny pack or whatever you want to call it, the very 90’s accessory which was once the preserve tourists is officially “in” once more. Wear it on your hips, across the body, through the loops in your favourite pair of jeans or, our favourite, layered over the top of a jacket to cinch in the waist. Worn in the right place, this can also help enhance your waist instead of a belt. Our stylists particularly love a great bum-bag as it means hands-free shopping!
