Makeup Tips – The Violet Revolution

You simply cannot miss the must-try colour trend of 2015: the violet revolution. Spring runway models for Vera Wang, Dolce & Gabbana and Sophie Theallet have been sporting mauves, burgundies and prunes on their lips and eyes. Although some dramatic shades may seem unattainable for every day wear, it’s not hard at all to incorporate this magenta colour into your daily routine. This spring it’s all about getting a little, shall we say, messy with our eye-shadow and tossing out precise lines. And don’t forget a bold lip, too!

Along with the warmer, natural clothing tones that are slowly entering our spring wardrobes, a smoky prune around your eyelids pairs perfectly with a lightweight sweater and distressed jeans. You can also try a romantic mauve lip for a simple, chic look during the daytime. For a more dramatic night-time look, try a burgundy on your lids and throw on your favourite leather jacket. Or maybe you’d prefer a rich mulberry lip instead?

Some tips from Harlow Beauty for pulling off these violaceous shades:

  1. Know your undertone. Lipsticks, especially, have undertones such as blue, brown, red or pink. Blue undertones can be worn by women with both light and dark eyes, whereas brown tones work to bring out dark eyes and pink tones make bright eyes pop. The deep red tones are generally based on your hair colour. If you’re unsure about what the shade’s undertone is, bring a tissue to the store and swipe the tester over it. The white background of the tissue will tell you what the undertone is.
  2. Check your teeth. When rocking a darker lip, it’s important to check your teeth for excess lipstick. A quick check before you go, such as putting your finger in your mouth, closing your lips and pulling your finger out will prevent the lipstick from going on your teeth.
  3. Moisturise your eyes. In order to get the best smoky eye, make sure you moisturise the area first so the makeup can go on smoothly.
  4. Be confident! You are making a strong statement with these shades and team it with a (lipstick free) smile – you’re a force to be reckoned with.

These are a few of our favourite products at the moment…

Whether you’re looking to rock the plum pout or lavender lids, it’s easy to find the proper shade for your undertone and even easier to incorporate these shades into your everyday routine. Book a makeup lesson to find out how to wear these tones work for you.

What about skin undertones? I know mine (cool), but how should be look for lipsticks, in particular, that don’t wash them out or make them look sick because the undertones are off?
