How to mix prints like a pro

For many women, wearing patterns can be daunting. Checking yourself multiple times in your mirror before heading out for the day is common (you’re not the only one!) Here at Style Doctors our stylists understand the everyday struggles you’re facing and we want to encourage you wear your prints with confidence.

The trick with patterns is finding a key colour to accent within the pattern to bring out in the rest of your outfit. This key colour does not always have to be black or a primary colour either. We want to encourage you to feel free to get creative and experiment with different tones of your favourite colours. We recommend having a statement pattern piece such as a blouse or a blazer and rocking it with the same colour trousers.

“Start by just incorporating one print into an otherwise solid outfit. Playing with texture is also a great way to begin experimenting” says Style Doctors stylist Elin.

Mixing pattern on pattern is a trend that our stylists love as it’s a great opportunity to look chic and unique. The trick with finding the right patterns has a lot to do with the colours you select.

Style Tip #1

Make sure you both patterns pull from the same key colour.

Style Tip #2

Matching a patterned scarf with different patterned trousers can be difficult to pull off, but rather pleasing when the exact same colour is being pulled.

Style Tip #3

Having patterns both on top and on the bottom of your outfit is perfect way to play with bright colours no matter what you’re doing.

Style Tip #4

Stripes are the easiest way to mix prints, as they’re the basic definition of a print, which makes them really versatile against any other.

With spring right around the corner we are loving large print pattern dresses. Look for a large print and strong base colour to help elongate the body (plus they’re perfect for keeping cool while also looking chic at work!) We suggest playing with a bright colour such as red and blue and pairing it with a classic heel. This look is perfect for a day at the office but can also be worn in the evening.

Weather you’re new to wearing patterns or simply not sure, we encourage you to try these looks. Patterns are meant to be fun and playful so do not take yourself too seriously!
